Asbestos removal and disposal in Victoria

What applies

WorkSafe describes a limited exception involving no more than 10 square metres of non-friable material and no more than one hour of removal work in seven days, counting the combined total time across all workers, not one hour per worker. Practical checks for your business

These suggested planning steps help organise site information; they are not an exhaustive legal compliance checklist.

  1. Give the assessor the site history and proposed demolition or renovation scope. Do not disturb suspect material to estimate a quote.
  2. Ask the removalist to confirm licence scope, notification, packaging, transport and destination requirements for the job.
  3. Request a written scope covering removal, disposal and any clearance or monitoring required. Keep the resulting records together.

For a disputed requirement or enforcement issue, ask the relevant authority or qualified adviser to identify the current provision and how it applies. Do not rely on an old penalty amount or general website summary.

Keep a usable decision record

Keep assessments, acceptance conditions, responsible contacts and supporting records together. Note what needs confirmation before changing the service or starting work.

Common question

Can asbestos go in an ordinary construction skip?

Do not include suspect asbestos in an ordinary skip booking. Ask a competent asbestos professional to specify the arrangements first.
