Compare waste providers using a written site specification, complete costs, suitable handling, service response and contract terms.
Specify your site before approaching providers
List each address, waste stream, bin, collection schedule and access window. Include photographs and measured weights where available. Ask each provider to identify exclusions and assess the same specification so their offers can be compared.
Check who does the work
Ask who collects the waste, who receives it and who manages issues. If subcontractors are involved, request the responsibility and escalation arrangements. Subcontracting alone does not establish poor service; assess the actual process and evidence.
Verify requirements for your waste
Use EPA Victoria’s waste duties guidance to identify the classification and checks needed for your streams. Ask the provider to show the applicable permissions and receiving arrangements. Do not assume every ordinary collection needs the same permission as a regulated waste movement.
Compare the complete price
Request collection, rental, disposal, weight allowances, surcharges, failed-access and contamination terms. Establish GST treatment and the circumstances in which the quote changes. Show one-off transition charges separately from ongoing costs.
Test service and reporting arrangements
Ask how missed collections are reported, who responds, and what happens during public holidays or site closures. If you need weight or recovery reports, request a sample and the measurement method. Avoid relying on a generic sustainability claim.
Read before accepting
Review renewal, cancellation, price adjustment, equipment removal and the procedure for changing service. Record any negotiated variation in the agreement. Compare the first invoice and collections against what was promised, then resolve differences with the provider.
