Bundle Waste
The Monash Recycling & Waste Centre at 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill charges $220 per cubic metre of general waste for City of Monash residents and $250 for non-residents in 2026-27. Green waste is $50 per cubic metre for residents and $100 for everyone else. Batteries, cardboard, e-waste, scrap metal, clothing and small volumes of cooking and engine oil are free for residents. It is open 7.30am to 3pm seven days a week and serves Clayton, Notting Hill, Mulgrave, Oakleigh, Glen Waverley and the surrounding suburbs as a transfer station.

Vehicle loads of general and green waste are priced by vehicle type, size and how much is on board; the council publishes the full vehicle-based schedule as a PDF on the fees page. Soil is the expensive line: on the council's own schedule a cubic metre or more is $565.10 for a resident and $610 for a non-resident, against $220 and $250 for general waste. Soil is dense, so a given volume carries far more weight to landfill than the same volume of mixed general waste. Loads under a cubic metre are charged at a lower rate, shown above.
Free for City of Monash residents
Batteries, cables, cardboard and paper (under 1 m³), CDs and DVDs, clothing, cooking oil (up to 20 L), engine oil (up to 30 L), e-waste, scrap metal and paint (up to 100 L). These streams are sent to processors rather than landfill, which is why they carry no levy and no charge.
How a Melbourne tip fee is built
Every general-waste gate fee in metropolitan Melbourne has three layers. The Victorian landfill levy is $177.19 per tonne from 1 July 2026 (EPA Victoria), up from $169.79 the year before. GST is added on top of the whole fee. The rest is the operator's cost of handling, transport to landfill and margin, which is why the same cubic metre is priced differently from one facility to the next, and why this council charges $220 to a resident and $250 to a non-resident for identical material. Recyclable streams (cardboard, scrap metal, e-waste, batteries) carry no levy, which is why they are free or cheap at almost every gate.
When a business should stop tipping and get a bin
Tip runs make sense for one-off clean-outs. They stop making sense once someone is driving to the gate every week. Compare the whole trip, not the gate fee. An 1100L bin collected weekly holds about 4.4 m³ a month and is collected from your door, with the disposal component already inside the price. A tip run costs the published rate above — $220 per cubic metre for a City of Monash resident, $250 at the non-resident rate a work load attracts — plus fuel, the vehicle and an hour of someone's time on every trip, none of which appears on the receipt. Ways to pay less at the gate
- Sort before you go. Cardboard, scrap metal, e-waste and batteries are free at most metro facilities. Hidden recyclables inside a mixed load are charged at the general rate.
- Know the minimum charge. Small loads are billed at the minimum regardless of weight; combining two half-loads into one trip usually saves the second minimum.
- Weight beats volume for dense waste. Where a facility offers per-tonne pricing on a weighbridge, soil, concrete and timber are usually cheaper by weight than by trailer size.
- Check for resident vouchers. Some councils issue free-disposal vouchers with the rates notice. They do not apply to commercial loads, but they do apply to the owner's own household waste — check whether your council issues them and on what conditions.
- Keep green waste separate. On this facility's own schedule, green waste is $50 per cubic metre for a resident against $220 for general waste. Mixing green waste into a general load removes that difference entirely.
