From 1 July 2026 the Mornington Peninsula Shire charges $120 per cubic metre of general or hard waste for residents, $171 for non-residents and $150 for commercial loads at its Mornington (134 Watt Road), Rye (280 Truemans Road, Fingal) and Tyabb (21 McKirdys Road) resource recovery centres. A 240-litre car boot is $31 / $46.50 / $40 and a 40-litre bag $9 / $16.50 / $14. Green waste is $50 / $52 / $61 per cubic metre. At Rye, trucks with putrescible loads go to the landfill and pay $450 per tonne across the weighbridge. Prices include the $177.19 landfill levy and GST, and the Shire notes they rose this year because of that levy increase and higher disposal costs for some materials.

Staff measure the load at the gate, so the per-cubic-metre base rate is what a ute or trailer is actually charged. The commercial column is 25% above the resident rate and slightly below the non-resident rate.

All trucks carrying putrescible waste are directed to the Rye landfill and weighed. Small trucks with solid inert loads under 4 m³, and skip bins up to 4 m³, use the push pit and pay per cubic metre, as do all utes and trailers.
Vouchers
Ratepayers receive waste vouchers with their rates notice. One voucher covers 0.5 m³ of hard waste or 1 m³ of green waste, and vouchers can also be used for mattresses and tyres. They are a household entitlement, not a business one.
How a Melbourne tip fee is built
Every general-waste gate fee in metropolitan Melbourne has three layers. The Victorian landfill levy is $177.19 per tonne from 1 July 2026 (EPA Victoria), up from $169.79 the year before. GST is added on top of the whole fee. The rest is the operator's cost of handling, transport to landfill and margin. Recyclable streams (cardboard, scrap metal, e-waste, batteries) carry no levy, which is why they are free or cheap at almost every gate.
When a business should stop tipping and get a bin
Tip runs make sense for one-off clean-outs. They stop making sense once someone is driving to the gate every week. In the Mornington Peninsula a 1100L general-waste bin collected weekly costs $130–240 a month on Bundle Waste's 2026 benchmarks: about 4.4 m³ of waste a month, collected from your door, with the levy already inside the price. Ways to pay less at the gate
- Sort before you go. Cardboard, scrap metal, e-waste and batteries are free at most metro facilities. Hidden recyclables inside a mixed load are charged at the general rate.
- Know the minimum charge. Small loads are billed at the minimum regardless of weight; combining two half-loads into one trip usually saves the second minimum.
- Weight beats volume for dense waste. Where a weighbridge is offered, soil, concrete and timber are usually cheaper by the tonne than by trailer size.
- Green waste separately. Green waste is typically 40–60% cheaper than general waste at the same gate.
