A contamination charge should be checked against the specific service agreement and evidence for the collection. There is no universal Australian fee or percentage threshold. Do not assume one wrong item always causes an entire truckload to be rejected.
What counts as contamination?
For a particular collection, contamination means material outside the accepted specification or preparation conditions. Ask the operator for the current list. Check a disputed charge

Fix the cause at the site
- Identify where the unwanted material entered the stream.
- Compare bin labels with the collector's current acceptance list.
- Place the necessary alternative bin or collection route where staff can use it.
- Give contractors, cleaners and new starters the same instructions.
- Record repeat incidents and review whether the change worked.
Do not ask staff to reach into bins or manually retrieve unknown items to avoid a charge. Escalate hazardous or uncertain contents through the site's safety process.
Measure the outcome honestly
Track incident count, affected services and actual invoiced charges over comparable periods. Keep any estimate of avoided cost separate from realised savings. See recycling-bin guidance and the audit checklist.
