A waste broker helps a business arrange waste services through collection or processing providers. The actual work, payment model and contractual responsibilities depend on the engagement. Ask for these in writing rather than assuming all brokers operate the same way.
Work to include in a brokerage brief
- Review the current service specification and invoices.
- Identify providers able to meet the stated material and access requirements.
- Compare like-for-like quotations and document exclusions.
- Support negotiations and a planned transition where agreed.
- Manage reporting or service issues only where included in the scope.
These are possible deliverables to request, not a promise that every broker includes them. Confirm whether specialist classification, legal advice or independent environmental assurance requires a separate adviser.
How is a broker paid?
Ask about client fees, supplier commissions, referral payments, mark-ups or savings-linked remuneration. Request the calculation and payment terms for the actual engagement. Supplier payment does not by itself tell you whether the service suits your business; assess disclosure, selection criteria and the complete proposal.
Who holds the collection contract?
| Question | Why to settle it |
|---|---|
| Who signs and who invoices? | Identify the parties and payment responsibility |
| Who can change services? | Avoid unauthorised changes to cost or treatment |
| Who handles service failures? | Establish a practical escalation route |
| What happens when brokerage ends? | Protect access to records and continuing collections |

How to assess a savings claim
Require a documented baseline, equivalent service scope, comparison period and treatment of additional fees. Separate a proposed saving from a result realised on actual invoices. Check that the proposal preserves the required material route and service reliability.
