Where should waste bins be placed on commercial premises?

Choose bin positions from the collection method, site access, spill risks and applicable building or council requirements. There is no substantiated universal three-metre or two-metre rule in this review.

What to check

1. Agree vehicle approach, lifting clearance, gradients and bin movement with the contractor for its actual equipment.
2. Keep emergency access and pedestrian routes clear and obtain relevant site requirements.
3. Consider how leakage, washwater and windblown waste will be contained; do not rely on distance from a drain alone.
4. Check presentation and storage against the approved waste plan and confirm any public-space permission.
