Victoria’s household four-stream system is not a blanket instruction for every commercial waste contract. Check whether you use a council service or a private business arrangement and follow its current acceptance rules.
Understand the household scope
The Victorian Government’s explanation covers household services provided through councils and Alpine Resorts Victoria. It identifies glass, food and garden organics, mixed recycling and general rubbish. Its household lid colours are purple, lime green, yellow and red respectively.
Check which service your premises use
Ask your council or contracted collector whether your business is eligible for a council service and which rules apply. A commercial bin may operate under a different contract. Do not replace the provider’s accepted-material list with assumptions based only on a lid colour.
Assess the materials you actually generate
Record food scraps, glass, cardboard, containers and residual material separately. Use those observations to request suitable options. Confirm how the receiver treats compostable liners, packaging and other ambiguous items before writing workplace signage.
Compare the full configuration
Price any additional service alongside the proposed changes to existing bins. Include equipment, collection, space, cleaning, staff movement and additional fees. Moving to more streams does not establish a universal percentage saving.
Train and check the workflow
Use examples from the site and brief cleaning contractors. Ensure the material remains separated when bins are emptied internally. Ask for feedback on rejected items and update instructions when the service changes.
Separate policy from a binding requirement
Do not turn a policy direction into an invented date for a future commercial mandate. Confirm the current requirement for the premises, material and jurisdiction. Retain the written advice or source used for that decision.
